Bankruptcy is a process under federal law in which individuals or companies are released from obligation to pay their prior debts due to insolvency. Individuals are allowed to keep certain “exempt” assets. Types of bankruptcy cases include Chapter 7 liquidations, Chapter 13 wage earner plans and Chapter 11 reorganizations.
