James M. Marquardt was born in 1949 in Detroit, Michigan. Jim earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan in 1972, and in 1980 received his law degree from DePaul University College of Law, where he served as Business Manager of the DePaul Law Review.

Jim’s expertise is primarily in real estate, including sale and leasing transactions, condominium developments, zoning and land use law, construction contracts and liens, property tax appeals, real estate litigation, security interests in real estate, historic preservation law, and oil & gas.

Jim is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, the Michigan Land Title Standards Committee, and the Michigan Real Property Law Section. He has authored articles for the Michigan Real Property Review, a publication of the Real Property Law Section.

Jim has extensive involvement in community activities. He is past board president of the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo, and current board president of The Kalamazoo Civic Theatre. Jim also is past chair of the Economic Development Corporation of the City of Kalamazoo, past chair of the City’s Brownfield Redevelopment Authority, and current chair of the City’s Local Development Finance Authority.

Jim and his wife, Michele, live in Kalamazoo. Their son, Drew, is a college student in Glasgow, Scotland.
